Fantasy Afield is a place where nature and fantasy meet,
and where we find beauty and magic in the everyday.
Fantasy + Nature
Fantasy Afield is dedicated to a love of literature and worlds of fantasy. This is also a space for celebrating the natural world and the profound sense of connection and belonging it brings.
One of my favorite recurring themes in literature is an exhortation to pay closer attention. To open our eyes. To focus.
I think this request goes far beyond asking us to look up from our phones and notice the world around us. Instead, something significant should change when we see the world anew, with fresh eyes.
Beauty + Magic
In our time together, I hope we find elements of magic in our everyday lives, especially if they helps us connect to the natural world around us.
On Fantasy Afield, we’ll explore fantasy novels, films, shows, and art. We will look at intersections of fantasy and nature/ecology, what I term ecofantasy.
We’ll also look at nonfiction texts that examine nature and language. Some posts will discuss aspects of creative living, like journaling, as well as forms of self-understanding such as tarot or personality typing. On occasion, I’ll share some of my writing research and how real-world wonders translate into fiction and fantasy. (For an example, check out this post on elm tree lore.)
I’d love to hear about what you’re currently reading! Or, you can share your favorite fantasy novels, and why they stand out to you. Visit the contact page to get in touch.
I’m also excited to share my epic fantasy series, Age of Azuria with you! Read more about Buried Heroes, book one in the series, here.
